Newcastle United told to U-turn after 'big' Callum Wilson development - pundit

Newcastle United would be taking a “big gamble” if they do not sign another striker this summer and overly rely on Callum Wilson, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested Newcastle can think about challenging for the top six if they bolster their front line.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday (17 July) that Eddie Howe was prepared to take a risk on Wilson going into the 2022-23 campaign.

The Newcastle boss wants between 20 and 25 goals from his striker and backed the 30-year-old along with Chris Wood to reach that figure.

It is likely that the majority of their remaining transfer budget will now go on a wide attacker with a number of players linked.

Wilson’s time at St. James’ Park has been plagued by injuries and he has featured in just over half of the available minutes in the Premier League since his move from AFC Bournemouth in the summer of 2020.

“I think they should definitely keep him as their number one choice,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But I still feel it is a big gamble because he’s had his injury problems. Sometimes the injuries he’s been getting have been bad luck, especially with his ankle.

“I think they should bring in another striker, especially if they want to start challenging for the European places.”

Despite his limited playing time, Wilson has still scored 20 goals in 44 Premier League games for the Magpies.

Chris Wood found the net just twice in 16 appearances since his £25million move from Burnley in January.
