Newcastle told 'Wilson will love' top target who source reveals is close to signing - pundit

Callum Wilson would love it if Newcastle United completed the signing of Kieran Trippier, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Tripper would be a “great signing” for Newcastle.

A club source told Football Insider today (15 December) they are increasingly confident of signing the right-back from Atletico Madrid next month.

The 31-year-old is a top target of Newcastle who are looking to bolster their defensive ranks and talks are well underway.

Eddie Howe’s side have kept just one clean sheet this season and shipped four goals against Leicester in their last game.

But Agbonlahor has suggested Trippier’s attacking quality will also be a welcome addition at St. James’ Park.

The defender has provided 11 assists in 83 games across all competitions for Atletico.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent, that would be a great signing.

“I’m sure they would be paying a big lump to get him there but if they can, 100 per cent.

“Manquillo is a journeyman who does not really have the quality at right-back, to be honest.

“I’m sure Callum Wilson would love the service that Trippier can bring.

“That would be a great signing if they can get that done.”

Trippier is under contract in the summer of 2023 after signing a four-year deal when he made the switch from Tottenham in 2019.

The England star, who can also play at left-back, has played 107 times in the Premier League for Burnley and Spurs.
