Bruno Guimaraes 'next to leave Newcastle' after Eddie Howe's resignation sends shockwaves

Eddie Howe has resigned as Newcastle United manager as a result of a turbulent transfer window which has seen his squad picked apart.

Major departures including the big-money sales of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, and the threat of losing Bruno Guimaraes, had casued major issues for the boss.

Meanwhile, an inability to land their top targets and continually seeing them poached by rival clubs had led to a buildup of frustrations behind the scenes at St James' Park.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Howe has been "hamstrung" by the Newcastle board and had a very difficult job on his hands.

That is believed to have contributed to his decision to walk away, with the boss now expected to take a break from football, and he will be replaced by Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle.

Jaissle will now face similar concerns and frustrations following his appointment, with a nightmare 12 months in the transfer market likely to continue.

Why has Eddie Howe left Newcastle United?

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Newcastle told Howe they were expectign results and performances to improve at the start of the new season.

This came as both the manager and the board agreed to stick to their long-term plan at the end of what proved to be a frustrating season which ended with a 12th-place finish.

However, those plans have now been ripped up, with Howe moving on and Jaissle set to replace him after growing tensions behind the scenes at Newcastle.

"It's been very difficult for Eddie Howe over the last 12 months," Brown told Football Insider.

"The blame and the focus always gets put on the manager when results and performances aren't going right, but he keeps losing his best players without being able to replace them.

"Last summer it was Alexander Isak, now he's lost Gordon, Tonali, Bruno will be next to leave soon, and they're not bringing in top-level replacements.

"He's been hamstrung by the board, really, who haven't been able to convince these players to come in or their best players to stick around when other clubs come calling.

"They still have time, of course, but going into the start of the new season it's going to be difficult for the new manager, because the squad has been weakened.

"It's bound to be frustrating behind the scenes, for the manager and for the club as well, because they're not doing it on purpose, things just haven't gone right for them.

"They need huge improvements in a number of key areas and they haven't been getting the players in that they've needed, it's going to be a major worry."

What was Howe's biggest problem at Newcastle?

Major problems were mounting up for Howe before the summer window began, with poor Premier League performances and a miserable away record raising concerns.

Missing out on European football after a string of underwhelming displays led to calls for his head, but those frustrations have only grown during the transfer window.

Brown told Football Insider on 14 July that Newcastle are facing a "big problem" before the start of the new season after failing to get deals for their top targets over the line.

The Magpies had agreed a deal to sign Johan Manzambi before he eventually moved to Aston Villa, while a fee had been agreed for Victor Munoz before Liverpool swooped.

They have been left scrambling for options in the transfer market as a result, and are in a tricky position with a weakened squad ahead of the new season.
