Ederson ‘opens the door’ to Newcastle switch after Man United deal collapses
Eddie Howe is looking to rebuild his midfield ranks this summer following Sandro Tonali's £100million switch to Tottenham.
Bruno Guimaraes could also leave as Arsenal plot a move, while Joe Willock is facing an uncertain future too.
The Magpies have already raided Ajax for Sean Steur, and have held a longtime interest in Atalanta star Ederson.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, they could move to sign the Brazil international now that he is not set to join Man United.
The Red Devils were close to agreeing a deal for Ederson, but moved on to other options last week and signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
Newcastle set sights on Ederson as Man United deal fails
Man United had agreed a £37.8m deal with Atalanta to sign Ederson before they pulled out of the move, citing a knee issue in his medical.
Newcastle are keen to add a defensive midfielder to their ranks, with Howe known to be a genuine admirer of the Brazil international.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "He's a player that Newcastle have looked at in the past and have admired, so obviously this move to Manchester United falling down has potentially opened the door for them to make a move for him.
"Atalanta are quite relaxed in the whole situation, obviously they're a bit surprised that Manchester United haven't gone ahead and finalised that deal but they're willing to welcome Ederson back into the fold."
Archie Gray emerges as Newcastle target amid Spurs uncertainty
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Gray could replace Guimaraes at Newcastle this summer.
The Tottenham midfielder has seen Tonali and Mateus Fernandes arrive this summer to push him down the midfield pecking order ahead of next season.
He has been linked with several other clubs, with recent reports stating that the Magpies are weighing up an offer for his services.
It remains unclear if he is open to leaving Spurs, but he could be tempted to the north east if Newcastle offer guaranteed game time.
