Newcastle could land extra £10m+ as Champions League prize money revealed
Newcastle United will land more than £10million if they reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Eddie Howe’s side drew 1-1 against Barcelona in the first leg of their last-16 tie at St James’ Park last week.
Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 86th minute before Lamine Yamal scored an injury-time penalty for the Spanish champions.
The two sides go head-to-head in the second leg at the Camp Nou on Wednesday (18 March) for a place in the quarter-finals.
Progression into the last eight would provide Newcastle’s financial situation with a healthy boost after they have already banked a considerable amount of prize money from the competition.
How much have Newcastle earned from Champions League?
As per official Uefa documents, each team will earn a guaranteed £16.1m for playing in the Champions League this season.
They also receive extra cash payments under the governing body’s value pillar system, which is split into European and non-European segments based on their coefficient ranking and the market pool.
Clubs were awarded £1.8m for each win and £605,000 for a draw in the league phase, meaning Newcastle banked £8.4m after recording four victories and two draws from their eight fixtures.
They also received £860k for qualifying for the knock-out round play-offs and a further £860k for finishing in the top 16 of the league phase.
The 36 clubs competing in the Champions League this season were handed an additional amount based on their individual ranking in the league phase.
Kairat earned £238k after finishing bottom, while Newcastle landed £6m for finishing in 12th place.
The Magpies' victory over Qarabag in the knock-out round play-offs secured them a further £9.5m, taking their total earnings so far to £41.7m, excluding the value-pillar payments.
Howe’s side could add an extra £10.8m to their earnings if they can overcome Barcelona on Wednesday.
Why Newcastle are at risk of missing out on European football
Newcastle’s progress into the Champions League knock-out rounds has been the highlight of their season.
The north-east giants have endured a disappointing campaign domestically after being knocked out of the cup competitions and struggling for consistency in the Premier League.
Newcastle could miss out on a European place for next season, but their 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (14 March) should give them confidence.
That victory moved the Magpies up to ninth in the top-flight table and within three points of seventh-place Brentford after 30 matches.
While the game against Barcelona is vitally important for Newcastle, their fans will already have one eye on the Premier League clash against rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park on Sunday (22 March).
