Anthony Gordon scored and assisted on Wednesday as England beat Costa Rica 3-0 in their final World Cup warm-up.

Declan Rice and Ollie Watkins also scored for Thomas Tuchel's side, who looked absolutely ready for next week's opening clash against Croatia.

England are hoping to win a major international tournament for the first time in 60 years, with their sights firmly set on the final in New Jersey next month.

Gordon left Newcastle United last month, joining Barcelona in a deal worth around £69million after it was accepted that his desire was to leave.

The Magpies were keen to avoid another Alexander Isak situation and will ultimately be pleased with the fee they managed to generate.

On the balance of Wednesday's display, however, there may be some minds wishing that the decision had been made to wait until after the World Cup.

English media wax lyrical over Anthony Gordon

There has been some debate over the inclusion of Gordon in the England squad for the World Cup, despite Tuchel's clear fondness for him.

The winger scored 17 goals and provided five assists for Newcastle last season, but nine of them came from the penalty spot and there were many games in which he went missing.

Barcelona were clearly convinced, however, and so was Tuchel. Gordon's display on Wednesday went some way to proving why.

The 25-year-old was emphatic from the spot again to double England's lead, after he had set up Rice with a brilliant, darting run down the flank.

In total, the forward completed two dribbles, made two recoveries, won five duels and earned three free-kicks, in a fine display that may have locked in his place in the starting line-up against Croatia next week.

The Evening Standard rated Gordon a seven out of 10, while The Sun were more complimentary and gave the ex-Magpie a nine out of 10 rating.

The Mirror went in the middle with an eight out of 10 and wrote: "Very lively and razor sharp, the left winger put in an excellent audition to start against Croatia."

How likely is Gordon to start against Croatia?

All England minds are on Tuchel's starting line-up against Croatia next week, with several key decisions to be made.

Reece James, Nico O'Reilly and Jordan Pickford will almost certainly be named in the starting XI, but Ezri Konsa and John Stones both find themselves under pressure from Marc Guehi.

Newcastle may have just found the perfect Anthony Gordon replacement as update emerges

The midfield three that started on Wednesday - Rice, Elliot Anderson and Jude Bellingham - appeared very settled and will surely start. Clearly, there is no doubt about Harry Kane, either.

The wings are where Tuchel does have a conundrum, however. Noni Madueke started on the right and was positive, but Bukayo Saka will undoubtedly take over if he is fit enough.

On the left, Gordon must see off the challenges of Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers, although Wednesday's display has given him the best possible chance.
