How much Newcastle must spend to hijack Sunderland's Dayann Methalie deal

Newcastle United could be set to hijack a deal of their own, and against none other than their bitter rivals, Sunderland.

The Magpies were the Premier League's laughing stock last summer, missing out on enough transfers to field a starting lineup.

Since the most recent transfer window opened, while Newcastle have been active, they kicked off proceedings by losing out on Johan Manzambi and Victor Munoz.

However, with Matthias Jaissle now in charge, Newcastle are attempting to upset another club's transfer activity by targeting Dayann Methalie.

The Toulouse full-back has been a major target for Sunderland this summer, already seeing four bids rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

This development now provides the Magpies with the perfect opportunity pounce for the 20-year-old's signature, who grabbed three goal contributions in 2025-26.

The Black Cats' latest bid for Methalie has been turned down, one which is believed to be in the region of €33million (£28.2m).

This is according to La Depeche (11 August), who can reveal that Toulouse want €40m (£34.2m) for their academy graduate if he is to depart this summer.

Toulouse's owners are playing extremely hard-to-get when it comes to Methalie, which could open the door for Newcastle to strike a deal.

Lewis Hall's future is a huge talking point at St James' Park, and despite leaving the training camp early, Newcastle are not worried just yet.

It is believed that the 21-year-old has simply suffered an injury setback and is working hard to return for the Magpies' pre-season clash with Everton.

Joao Palhinha could already be subject of transfer hijack

Methalie is not the only player that Newcastle could hijack the signing of this summer, it would appear.

Aston Villa looked to be closing in on a deal for Joao Palhinha, but with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg no longer an option for Newcastle, they have a new target.

The midfielder spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, and everyone thought the deal would be made permanent due to his performances.

He notched seven goals and three assists in 45 games, becoming an integral part of the squad, and now the Magpies could be set to benefit.
