Johan Manzambi: Newcastle target is 'World Cup's hottest prospect', this is why
Newcastle United target Johan Manzambi has become the youngest player to record five goal involvements at the World Cup since records began in 1966.
The 20-year-old has joined Thomas Muller as the only Under-21 player to achieve that feat on the grandest stage since 2000, according to Opta.
The Freiburg midfielder demonstrated his ability as Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 on Friday to reach the round of 16, putting the ball on a plate for Breel Embolo's opener before Dan Ndoye got the second.
Newcastle are in talks to sign Manzambi, who is under contract until 2030 and expected to cost in the region of £50million.
The starlet has been among the stars of the World Cup so far, notching five direct goal contributions in his last three games after failing to even start the opening two matches.
The Magpies may well have to move swiftly if they are to sign the talent, who also scored seven goals and registered six assists across all competitions for Freiburg this season.
Swiss media go Johan Manzambi mad as history set
Newcastle have reportedly been in talks with Freiburg over a deal for Manzambi for a week now, but fears are beginning to set in.
The Magpies have been in this position before and lost out at the final stage, like in the case of Victor Munoz and Liverpool just a few weeks ago.
The signing of Manzambi cannot be allowed to play out the same way, and after agreeing to sell Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100m, there is really no excuse.
Newcastle can undoubtedly expect some late competition, however, after the midfielder dribbled his way from just past halfway to the by-line before setting up Embolo.
Becoming the youngest player to reach five goal involvements since 1966 would be a monumental feat by itself, but Manzambi is a central midfielder.
"Johan Manzambi (20) is currently Switzerland's hottest prospect – and perhaps the entire World Cup," wrote Andri Baggli for Swiss outlet Blick.
Newcastle must secure transfer coup
Unfortunately for Newcastle, Manzambi appears to be attracting more potential suitors every time he steps on the pitch at the World Cup.
The Magpies have stolen the march on his signature, but it remains unclear if the midfielder will be willing to commit his future before the tournament ends.
The 20-year-old will be aware that other offers may well arrive in the coming weeks, although Newcastle will have one key advantage.
Tonali's exit and the uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimaraes should almost guarantee to Manzambi that a move to St James' Park will mean significant playing time.
