Newcastle United’s Anthony Elanga has been praised by the Swedish media for his performance in the 3-0 defeat against France on Tuesday.

Sweden exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32, as the French comfortably dispatched Graham Potter’s side.

In the end, the Scandinavian nation proved to be little threat, with many players disappointing.

However, Elanga’s performance drew praise from the media, as they highlighted that he “created chaos” up top.

The Newcastle winger came into the game on fine form, having netted in his last two appearances.

While he was unable to repeat this trick, he can exit the tournament with his head held high.

Anthony Elanga helped out both offensively and defensively vs France

Elanga’s move to Newcastle certainly did not go to plan last season, with the 24-year-old often disappointing with his performances.

However, he showed the Magpies why they should keep faith in him in this year’s World Cup.

Despite being up against one of the favourites to win the competition in France, Elanga put in a noteworthy display and was a nuisance at both ends of the pitch.

Upon reviewing his performance, Fotbollskanalen claimed he was one of Sweden’s best players on the night, before writing: "Took defensive responsibility on his wing and at the same time created chaos for France going forward. Challenged when he got the opportunity."

How good was Elanga vs France?

According to Fotmob on 1 July, Elanga was okay against the French.

The winger managed to complete 83 per cent of his passes, create one chance, complete one dribble and three recoveries.

As a result, Sweden has now missed out on a round of 16 tie against Paraguay on Saturday, which could have been a great opportunity to reach the quarter-finals.

Now, Elanga will return to Newcastle, where Eddie Howe will be looking to finally unlock his quality at St James’ Park.

The 2026-27 campaign is likely going to be vital for the Sweden international’s future at St James’ Park, and another poor season could see him pushed out of the team altogether.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how Elanga will perform next campaign, as the club looks to return to Europe.
