Bruno Guimaraes has issued an apology to Newcastle United supporters on social media after a disappointing season ended with defeat at Fulham.

Newcastle were beaten 2-0 by their mid-table rivals Fulham on Sunday to finish the 2025-26 campaign in 12th place.

Goals in either half from Issa Diop and Tom Cairney saw the Cottagers jump ahead of the Magpies in the final standings.

Events elsewhere saw Sunderland qualify for the Europa League to compound Newcastle's misery, with no European football on the horizon at St James' Park.

Newcastle's last match of the season was a bleak way to end an underwhelming campaign, and Guimaraes has taken it upon himself to admit their faults.

Magpies captain Guimaraes featured for 66 minutes at Craven Cottage before he was taken off with cramp in both calves.

The Brazil star has continued to be a standout in Eddie Howe's midfield this season, registering nine goals and seven assists in 41 appearances despite the club's struggles.

He took to Instagram in typically honest fashion on Sunday evening to share a message with Newcastle supporters that read: "A very frustrating season, and without a doubt we are all very disappointed. You fans definitely did not deserve this. But football doesn’t always go the way we plan.

"Individually, I managed to have the season with the most goal contributions in my career, and I would trade all of that for a better position in the table. Honestly, I just want to thank the fans for everything. @nufc."

The post was liked by fellow Newcastle stars Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Leo Shahar and Malick Thiaw, who clearly all agree with Guimaraes' sentiments.

What is the latest on Guimaraes' future at Newcastle?

The latter part of Guimaraes' message has seen some Magpies supporters question his future at the club, with it being perceived as a farewell above anything else.

Their poor season has raised doubts around a possible summer move, with sources previously revealing to Football Insider that Michael Carrick admires Guimaraes and was planning to sign him if he was appointed the permanent Man United boss.

Carrick has now been handed the reins full-time at Old Trafford, but talk around the Brazilian's future has quietened and he is contracted to Newcastle until 2028.

It certainly seems more likely that his midfield partner Sandro Tonali is allowed to leave this summer, but an exit for Guimaraes should not be ruled out.
