Mateus Mane could be competing with Nick Woltemade for a place in Newcastle's starting eleven soon as they aim to prise him from Wolves this summer.

The 18-year-old Wolves starlet has attracted suitors from across Europe following an impressive breakthrough 2025-26 campaign.

He was a bright spark in a dismal season for the Old Gold as they were relegated to the Championship, with a move away likely this summer.

Recent reports have revealed that Newcastle have a long-standing interest in Mane and are considering a move for his services in the coming months.

He has mainly been deployed as an attacking midfielder for Wolves, which is where Eddie Howe gave Woltemade regular minutes towards the end of last season.

They are likely to be competing for a place in the Magpies' side next term if Mane arrives at St James' Park soon.

Woltemade did put in some better performances behind Will Osula in the second half of the season, but could struggle for minutes if Mane arrives, considering his clear talent and lofty potential.

How do Mateus Mane and Nick Woltemade's 2025-26 PL stats compare?

Mane only became a regular for Wolves in November after Rob Edwards' arrival, while Woltemade started the campaign in fine form up front after joining Newcastle from Stuttgart.

The Wolves starlet registered three goals and one assist in 1790 minutes across the season, as Woltemade notched eight times and provided three assists in 1912 minutes played.

Mane did register more chances created in less minutes, with 30 to Woltemade's 22, while he also outperformed the German's expected assists with 3.69 to 1.53.

Woltemade emerged with a better shot accuracy, with 54 per cent compared to 47 per cent, but he also missed six big chances as Mane did not miss any.

The teenage forward had more accurate passes, successful dribbles, balls won in the final third and accurate long balls per 90 than Woltemade last season, too, so certainly seems to be a more creative force.

If Howe wants his forward players to help out defensively, then Mane would also seemingly be a better option, after he emerged on top in successful tackles, clearances and interceptions per 90 in 2025-26.

What has Woltemade said about his Newcastle future?

Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle want to sign a new striker this summer as Howe plans for Woltemade to regularly play as a number 10.

Reports have claimed that he is frustrated with his current standing in Howe's squad and wants to leave, but the 24-year-old has made it clear that he will stay on Tyneside to fight for his place.

Speaking to reporters in Germany last week, he said: "I’m an ambitious person and always want to reach my full potential. That’s easiest to do in attack. At Newcastle, I filled in at other positions, even as a defensive midfielder.

"No (regrets). I moved to the Premier League, the best league in the world, when I was 23. I’ve learned a lot this season. I’ve improved athletically, I can keep up with the tremendous pace, and I can hold my own in challenges.

"Overall, it’s been a step forward. That’s why I have no doubts about Newcastle. I’ll make my mark there."
