Matthias Jaissle faces losing yet another Newcastle star as fire sale intensifies
Matthias Jaissle is facing immediate concerns ahead of his appointment as Newcastle United manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The 38-year-old is the leading contender to replace Eddie Howe at St James' Park following the boss' surprise departure, with talks ongoing behind the scenes.
Despite being highly regarded for his work in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli and his development as a young coach at Red Bull Salzburg, he is inheriting a messy situation at Newcastle.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, concerns about major player sales and financial restrictions will make Jaissle's job difficult.
Both Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already left the club this summer, while Bruno Guimaraes wants to join Arsenal, and Lewis Hall continues to attract interest.
Despite having already spent around £110million on new players already this summer, there is a lingering feeling that their star names have not been adequately replaced.
What issues will Matthias Jaissle face at Newcastle?
Football Insider revealed on 31 July that Howe's decision to leave Newcastle was in part down to what has been a frustrating transfer window at St James' Park.
While his primary decision came amid a desire to step away from management, what is turning out to be another disappointing summer is believed to have contributed.
Jaissle will now inherit those concerns, with more major departures expected at Newcastle, alongside ongoing concerns about their spending and ability to land top targets.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Obviously it's been difficult for Newcastle losing players this summer, the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
"Bruno Guimaraes is now another that is set to leave, and these players will all need replacing, which could prove difficult.
"Obviously, they've been battling against PSR and FFP for a while now as they look to try and become a major contender in the Premier League as well.
"They've had to deal with these financial restraints over a number of years, which have heally held back Newcastle's ability to make progress.
"That's now something Matthias Jaissle will have to contend with if he is the one to come in and replace Howe at Newcastle."
Why are player sales becoming a concern at Newcastle?
For most clubs in the Premier League, major player sales are expected, especially when the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal come calling, but for Newcastle it has become a concern.
Their previous ambitious plans have been dealt a blow following a season in which they failed to qualify for Europe after finishing 12th in the Premier League table.
Meanwhile, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown warned Football Insider that Newcastle have a "big problem" when it comes to luring their top targets to St James' Park.
This summer, moves for both Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi have been hijacked by Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively, despite deals having been agreed.
That has become a worrying trend for the Magpies, having previously missed out on leading targets including the likes of Marc Guehi, Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro.
