Matthias Jaissle's senseless treatment of Newcastle rising star will anger dressing room
Matthias Jaissle was asked to explain Sean Steur's absence from the Newcastle United team on Saturday but could only point to the form of Nico Gonzalez.
The 18-year-old has spent the entirety of the last two Premier League games on the bench for the Magpies, despite starting the season excellently.
Jaissle's team have lost both games, falling to Johan Manzambi's unmarked header in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Steur cost Newcastle £23million to sign from Ajax in the summer transfer window and has emerged a serious talent, even winning player of the match for his display against Hull City before the international break.
Fellow summer arrival Gonzalez arrived for around £52m from Manchester City and has been largely ever-present, despite struggling more recently.
Joelinton started alongside him in the midfield on Saturday, only coming off for Dan Burn as Newcastle changed shapes in the closing stages.
Matthias Jaissle's Sean Steur explanation is senseless
Steur's absence from the Newcastle team has seemingly come completely out of the blue. It should anger the dressing room, too.
The midfielder was forced off injured against Hull before the break but played for the Netherlands Under-21s and has returned to the squad.
Asked about the decision on Saturday, Jaissle said: "First of all he is one of the youngest lads so that is something we mentioned from the start, that it needs time.
"I have also mentioned before that Nico Gonzalez is doing good. He is a leader in our young squad in that position. Sometimes it's not just about the player who isn't playing, it's an aspect for the lad who plays instead."
The German's words sound like a rather poor excuse. Steur has not even made it off the bench in the last two games, and was showing signs of finding his feet in the Premier League before the break.
He is incredibly young for a midfielder, and it would be wise and understandable to want to shield him from the spotlight.
Yet Jaissle's decision seems to be one stifling both Steur and his team, who undeniably look to be a worse outfit without the young Dutchman.
Jaissle must reintroduce Steur
Steur is not the only young midfielder struggling for minutes at Newcastle. Summer arrival Aladji Bamba is yet to start a game, and has not made it off the bench since before the international break.
Unfortunately for both midfielders, Jaissle appears to have grown a fondness for experience, even when it is not helping his team.
Steur provides balance and quality - two things that Newcastle looked to seriously lack in the midfield on Saturday.
The teenager must be reinstated immediately if the Magpies are to get out of the hole they currently find themselves in.
