Newcastle backed to trigger Marcus Rashford release clause by Man United insider

Newcastle could make a move to sign Marcus Rashford this summer after Barcelona turned down the chance to land him permanently.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the north-east giants could soon submit a formal offer for the England World Cup star.

Rashford earned a place in England's World Cup squad after showing some fine form out on loan at Barcelona last season.

The 28-year-old was reportedly keen to make a permanent move to the Camp Nou, but they decided against triggering his £26m buy clause.

Recent reports have claimed that Man United retain a £40m release clause in his existing contract, with several clubs keen on exercising it.

His next move currently seems unlikely to be confirmed until after the end of England's World Cup campaign.

Marcus Rashford on Newcastle's radar as Man United criticised

Rashford last played for the Red Devils in December 2024 before going out on loan to Aston Villa.

He proved his quality under Unai Emery , then helped Barca to the La Liga title with 14 goals and 11 assists in 49 games last season.

“I was bitterly disappointed and couldn’t understand why they couldn't come to terms at United with what the problems were and solve them," Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

“But that was Ten Hag’s time, which was a shambles. I always felt that Manchester United needed Marcus. Now if you look at United, they've got those three up front, well four with Diallo, Sesko, Cunha, and Mbeumo.

“Every time he comes on for England, he looks like winning the game, doesn't he? Because he's explosive, he's got pace, and he takes people out of the game with and without the ball. I just think that there aren't too many players about like that who can do that.

“As things go now, somebody's got to tell me why it is that Marcus Rashford isn’t worth £28m. I don't get that.

“And there are plenty of teams here, you think, when you talk about Newcastle…it's £28m when you've just received £125million for a striker. They paid more than that to sign the Brentford striker and Rashford's better.”

Which other clubs are interested in Rashford right now?

Rashford will return to being a Man United player on 1 July, but seemingly has no future at the club under former teammate Michael Carrick.

Sources have told Football Insider that Villa retain an interest in Rashford as they look to add more quality to their squad ahead of a Champions League return.

He rediscovered his best form under Emery, with four goals and five assists in 17 appearances on loan.

Tottenham also hold a close interest in his signature, according to reports, but any club keen on a move will have to stump up £40m this summer.
