Newcastle must accelerate Yoane Wissa move as England flashpoint proves Eddie Howe right
Newcastle have been shown exactly why they need to sell Yoane Wissa this summer after his bad miss against England in the World Cup.
Wissa has gone to the World Cup hoping to rediscover his previous fine form following a hugely disappointing debut season at Newcastle.
The 29-year-old only made his Magpies debut in December and scored just three goals in 28 appearances before the end of the campaign.
He scored in DR Congo's World Cup opener against Portugal and then notched a brace in their final group game against Uzbekistan to set up a round of 32 clash against England.
Wissa failed to make an impact on the biggest stage for his country against the Three Lions and missed a golden chance to put them 2-0 up in the first half.
He was made to rue his missed opportunity as Harry Kane's late brace sent England through to the last 16.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is believed to be open to selling Wissa, and the club must bow to his demands following this latest proof of poor form in front of goal.
Yoane Wissa failed to prove himself against England and missed a huge chance to score
Wissa came back into the Newcastle fold towards the end of last season, but still failed to start a game from February onwards.
His last goal for the Magpies came at the end of January, but he looked to overcome his poor form with some strong showings for his country at the World Cup.
The 29-year-old played the full 90 minutes against the Three Lions on Wednesday, but failed to muster a shot on target or create a chance, and had just one touch in the penalty area.
He faltered in the biggest moment of the game for DR Congo, as they would surely have been able to hold on at 2-0 up heading into the second half.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka delivered a cross from the right side of the box in the 44th minute as Wissa got in front of the England centre-backs, but his shot from close range pinged off the post and went out.
The Newcastle striker simply had to score, as he had the goal gaping and the ball had deflected into his path.
He is clearly not the man for the big moments, and Howe's desire to let him leave St James' Park this summer should be met as he returns to the club from international duty soon.
Nick Woltemade wants to stay at Newcastle as Wissa moves closer to leaving
Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle want to sign a replacement for Wissa this summer, with Woltemade set to be played as a number 10.
Reports have claimed that Woltemade has been frustrated with his standing in Howe's squad and wants to leave, but the 24-year-old has made it clear that he is keen to fight for his place on Tyneside.
Speaking to German reporters at the World Cup, he said: "I’m an ambitious person and always want to reach my full potential. That’s easiest to do in attack. At Newcastle, I filled in at other positions, even as a defensive midfielder.
"No (regrets). I moved to the Premier League, the best league in the world, when I was 23. I’ve learned a lot this season. I’ve improved athletically, I can keep up with the tremendous pace, and I can hold my own in challenges.
"Overall, it’s been a step forward. That’s why I have no doubts about Newcastle. I’ll make my mark there."
