Newcastle risk repeating past mistakes after new twist in Luiz Suarez transfer situation
Newcastle United would be making another mistake in the transfer market if they signed Sporting striker Luis Suarez.
That is despite Record claiming that Suarez will now not be joining Fenerbahce even after an agreement had reportedly been agreed due to Hakan Safi's defeat in the club's presidential election.
The Portuguese newspaper state that Newcastle still hold interest in Suarez, having had a bid rejected in May.
Suarez has a release clause of £70million, which Newcastle could find very tempting given they have just sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for around £69m.
At 28 though, it would seem impossible for Newcastle to recoup that fee if they wanted to sell Suarez in the future.
Newcastle are already facing that same problem with Yoane Wissa, whom the Magpies signed for £55m last summer.
Newcastle must be wary of signing Luis Suarez
Whilst injury problems have affected his time at Newcastle, Wissa has only scored three goals for the club in all competitions.
Trying to offload the striker is proving difficult, with few teams willing to make an approach for a 29-year-old who may now be past his best.
Suarez scored 28 goals for Sporting this season, but as Viktor Gyokeres has found out at Arsenal, the Premier League is more difficult to find the back of the net in than Portugal's top tier.
There is no guarantee that the Colombian will hit the ground running, and his participation in the World Cup this summer means Suarez will have little pre-season.
Sources told Football Insider that Newcastle are in a strong enough financial position to sign Suarez, even before they sold Gordon, and that a move this summer could be on the cards.
Newcastle signing looks to the future
Newcastle should be looking at signing a younger alternative to Suarez, and there most recent piece of transfer business shows the club want to go down that route.
The Magpies have just confirmed the arrival of Ewen Jaouen from French side Stade de Reims, with the 20-year-old proving that Howe is looking to the future.
If successful, Jaouen could either be Newcastle's new number one for years to come, or be sold for a healthy profit in the future.
Newcastle had one of the oldest squads in the Premier League this season, and the addition of Suarez would certainly show that Howe and the club have not learnt from their past transfer mistakes.
