Newcastle sent warning over Nicolas Jackson move, international scenes speak volumes
Newcastle United have been contemplating a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson this summer.
The 24-year-old looks set to leave Stamford Bridge after Bayern Munich opted against making their loan deal permanent.
New Blues manager Xabi Alonso may well come to a different conclusion on the forward, but Wednesday's scenes will have impressed nobody.
Jackson was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in as many minutes as Senegal drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, in a moment that should send a red flag to Newcastle.
Discipline issues have been a recurring feature of the former Villarreal forward's time since moving to Chelsea, and they will surely come with any move for him.
Undoubtedly, however, there is plenty of talent there as well, with Eddie Howe facing a difficult call this summer.
Nicolas Jackson scenes pose Newcastle issue
Considering the lack of consistent goal-scorers at St James' Park last season, it appears not to be a question of if a striker will arrive this summer but rather who will leave to make space.
Will Osula's late-season breakthrough has left Newcastle transfer chiefs with a seemingly clear choice between Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, although it will be far easier to sell the former.
With the way it is shaping up to be a transformation of the forward line at St James' Park this summer, it could even be two who depart.
Anthony Gordon has already left the club, joining Barcelona in a £69million deal, and there could yet be another exit on the wings.
Jackson, for all his faults, would offer an option through the middle and on the wings, and a strong one at that.
At his best, the Senegal international is a genuine difference-maker, netting 17 goals across all competitions in his first season for Chelsea.
But to sign him is to accept his faults, too. On Wednesday, the 24-year-old's first yellow came for a lazy high boot, before he clumsily bundled over a breaking attacker just seconds later.
Since May 2025, Jackson has had four red cards - a staggering number for a forward and an indictment to his discipline.
Newcastle have more reason to turn down Jackson deal
While Newcastle will be considering Jackson's quality and his discipline, it should not be forgotten that he will not be a cheap purchase.
The striker is under contract until 2033, with Chelsea under no pressure to accept anything less than what they demand.
And based on last summer, that asking price could reach as far as £80million - a price that Newcastle should steer well clear of.
Jackson is undoubtedly talented, but there are many better alternatives for Newcastle this summer.
