Newcastle set for 'far bigger signing spree' than originally planned - or Eddie Howe is in trouble

Eddie Howe could face serious pressure on his position as Newcastle United manager if they endure another slow transfer window

Following a disappointing 12th-placed finish in the Premier League, the Magpies need a huge summer overhaul to bolster Howe's squad.

However, financial issues are continuing to plague the club, and they may again be restricted in what they are able to do in the market.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown warned Football Insider that Howe will face renewed calls for his sacking if Newcastle fail to back him this summer.

If they are unable to significantly improve his team, and potentially even lose key players, a slow start to the season will ramp up the pressure on the manager.

Is Eddie Howe facing sack pressure at Newcastle?

Brown told Football Insider in April that Newcastle have major concerns about Howe given their dismal away form and disappointing end to the league season.

However, they ultimately decided to stick with their manager in the hope that he can turn things around and make the club competitive again next season.

That will only be possible with backing in the transfer market, though, and a disappointing season will only set the boss up for another slow start.

"Howe's future will be somethiing to keep an eye on," Brown told Football Insider.

"Newcastle need to have a strong start to the season, because if they start slowly there's going to be serious pressure and questions are going to be asked.

"They've decided to stick with Howe and I think that was the right call, but now they have to show they're willing to back him.

"That Newcastle squad needs a lot of work, you can go though one by one and see how many players need to be replaced or could be leaving this summer.

"If they lose key players, they need to bring in new ones, but if they're unable to spend like they have been in the last few windows, it's going to be a problem.

"It was a frustrating season for them and fans aren't all happy with Howe, so another bad window and a slow start to the season means he will come under pressure again."

What do Newcastle have planned for the transfer window?

Amid growing expectations and a demand for improvements to be made next season, Newcastle are aware that a lot will hinge on their activity in the transfer market.

There are concerns that the Magpies may be forced to sell players before they buy as in recent windows, with financial restrictions still taking their toll.

Meanwhile, former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Newcastle could struggle financially again this summer.

Stefan Borson: Newcastle to lose £55m Champions League boost – ‘It’s gone next season’

The Magpies have missed out on the £55million boost they received when qualifying for the Champions League last season, in a huge hit to their income.

That came alongside their reduced Premier League reward money, meaning player sales may be the only way they can raise significant funds this summer.
