Newcastle told how many days they must wait before completing Lucas Bergvall move

Newcastle United could make a move to sign Lucas Bergvall within days after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that UEFA's new 45-day rule could be playing into Newcastle's plans.

Bergvall's future remains a huge talking point in North London, with Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Sunderland all being linked.

Mick Brown told Football Insider, despite the departure of Eddie Howe, that the Magpies can "outbid" Forest, but not for a couple more weeks.

Spurs announced an eye-watering £100million deal for Tonali on Thursday 2 July, and 45 days would take the date to Sunday, 16 August.

That is exactly when Newcastle are being tipped to make a move for the frustrated 20-year-old midfielder, who is pushing for a switch of clubs this summer.

Lucas Bergvall to Newcastle United to ignite soon

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson suggested that once 45 days are up after the deal for Tonali, Newcastle could make their move.

"I just don't see any real way in which you can position his valuation between £50m and £60m. Who says he's £50m? Who says he's £60m?" he said.

"It is very finger in the air. The player hasn't really done much. He looks like a decent prospect, but he wants to go.

"They may well be waiting just to see what happens with Newcastle because they need to wait for the 45 days to pass so that it's not player exchange from [Sandro] Tonali.

"Once that passes, and I think it's probably about another 16 days for that, that opens up another possible route."

How could Newcastle's managerial change impact transfers?

The Magpies have already lost Anthony Gordon, Tonali and Kieran Trippier, but with plenty of funds raised from those deals, the club are reinvesting.

Matthias Jaissle is set to join up with the squad in Spain, but his first big blow could come very soon in the shape of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Joelinton has also been rumoured to want a move away, but they don't seem like anything more than just that - rumours.

Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento remain linked with exits, and either of their departures would leave a gaping hole in the squad ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
