Newcastle United face points deduction after deal collapses - sources

Newcastle United are likely to breach the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) if they fail to sell Yankuba Minteh before 30 June, sources have told Football Insider. 

Football Insider first revealed on 9 June the north-east giants could accept a £25million bid for the Gambia international. 

Sources say Newcastle are now some way short of falling within their allowable losses limit and need to make about £25million in profit over the next 48 hours to avoid a breach.

Minteh has turned down a move to Lyon despite the Tynesiders agreeing to sell the 19-year-old to the French club before they submit their accounts on 30 June. 

Eddie Howe’s side are now exploring other options to help them meet the PSR requirements in case they are unable to offload the winger.

Newcastle could breach PSR rules without Yankuba Minteh sale

Newcastle only signed Minteh for £6million from Danish side Odense last summer before sending him out on loan to Dutch giants Feyenoord for the campaign.

Football Insider revealed on 23 June the Premier League club were in advanced talks to sell the winger as they look to ease their financial concerns. 

But Minteh has rejected a move to Lyon and reports have suggested he is currently visiting family in Gambia, making a transfer difficult before Sunday’s deadline. 

If Newcastle fail to sell the teenager over the next 48 hours and breach the PSR rules as a result, the likely punishment would be a points deduction next season. 

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points last season after being found to have broken the Premier League's spending rules.

Newcastle reported a £73million loss in their 2022-23 accounts following a £71million loss the previous year.

Premier League clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over three years, with the Tynesiders now needing to make about £25million in profit to remain within the limit.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Newcastle could look to deliberately breach the PSR rules to avoid selling their best players this summer.
