Newcastle's owners PIF raising red flags after new financial breaches - Stefan Borson
Newcastle United's owners are raising bigger red flags than the club's latest financial breaches at St James' Park.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the owners' engagement needs to be examined ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
PIF own an 80 per cent share in the Magpies, and while there are very few signs of them wanting to sell, supporters are concerned by a lack of investment recently.
Eddie Howe has already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, with others likely to follow, while the club have also been hit with new financial breaches.
Football Earnings and Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) could both play a role this summer, and questions are now being asked about the ownership's involvement.
Supporters are already concerned about the 2026-27 campaign, and if any more stars leave, like Bruno Guimaraes or Lewis Hall, the alarm bells will really start ringing.
PIF alarm bells ringing at St James' Park
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson raised concerns over PIF, suggesting that they will be far more of a concern than Newcastle's latest fines.
"I don't think it's worrying for Newcastle from a financial perspective. The bigger issue in Newcastle I think is how engaged our PIF in 2026?" he said.
"How much money do they want to put in? Are they going to build a stadium? All these things, these are much bigger issues.
"And if the answer is no, then it's going to be more challenging for them. I think they'll be fine next year from a PSR perspective.
"They've got an 85 per cent cap in the Premier League, and they'll have the settlement agreement."
Who else could Eddie Howe lose this summer?
The signing of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim should certainly calm any major worries right now, but the Magpies need to do so much more work.
Tonali's move to Tottenham Hotspur is likely to send shockwaves through St James' Park, and filling his shoes could be impossible ahead of the new season.
If Tino Livramento is to join them through the exit doors, the backline would be looking extremely weak, and that's without mentioning the centre-forward position.
Both Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa disappointed last term, and with rumours of them leaving already, Howe could be left completely in the dark.
PIF could make or break Newcastle over the coming weeks, and fans will be hoping that the owners show a lot more interest than they are right now.
