Newcastle's Saudi owners have 'lost their appetite' and it was 'intolerable' for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United's combined problems were too much for Eddie Howe to handle ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the 48-year-old had been completely burned out at St James' Park.

News of Howe's departure came completely out of the blue, even with the squad's ongoing struggles and continuous player losses in the market.

The Magpies have already lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Kieran Trippier, with Bruno Guimaraes closing in on a move to Arsenal next.

Newcastle's hierarchy have filled the positions, but only with inexperienced players from abroad, while a sanction from UEFA also looms over St James' Park.

All signs point towards a burnout for the former manager, who is set to be replaced by Matthias Jaissle, currently of Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.

Eddie Howe's 'deciding factor' to leave Newcastle

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson predicted that the departing players, largely out of his control, was the deciding factor this summer.

"With Eddie Howe, you've got a level of fatigue, you've got a disappointing season last term, and you've got the financial situation," he said.

"I think that became intolerable this summer, when you end up selling multiple players. And I don't think you can avoid the conclusion that the appetite from Saudi is not what it was.

"They're just in a different place now. Maybe the Iranian situation was a kind of trigger. Or maybe it was just coming, and it was just simple timing."

The Magpies have wasted no time in finding a replacement, with Jaissle jetting out to the pre-season camp in Spain to get started with the players.

What can Newcastle fans expect from Matthias Jaissle?

Jaissle's teams are all about high pressing and couter-attacking, attempting to force the opposition into mistakes in dangerous areas.

He also prefers for the ball to be moved quickly, rather than dawdling in possession, with rapid attacks and smooth transitions across the pitch.

The incoming Newcastle boss usually sticks to a back-four formation, but further up the field, Jaissle is open to a lot of flexibility.

While some will be concerned by his total lack of experience in major European leagues, he is a young, talented manager, who has plenty of time to adjust his tactics.
