FA 'on alert' as chances of Eddie Howe getting England manager job revealed
The FA undoubtedly view former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as a strong future candidate to become England manager.
That is according to former Everton chief executive and ex-Premier League board member Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 48-year-old is strongly admired as a homegrown English coach.
Howe recently stepped down from his role at Newcastle in surprise fashion, bringing to an end a five-year spell on Tyneside that took the club to new heights.
Wyness believes that while the ex-Bournemouth boss will take a break from football at the moment, he is a prime candidate to lead the Three Lions later down the line.
The FA opted to extend Thomas Tuchel's contract prior to this summer's World Cup, with the German set to lead the national team into the 2028 European Championships.
However, Wyness believes that Howe's exit from St James' Park will still have put the FA "on alert."
FA 'on alert' over Eddie Howe availability
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Howe is likely to take on one more project at club level before potentially turning towards the England job.
The Scottish businessman made it clear that he undoubtedly sees him as a future England boss, and feels that there is a chance he may step in when Tuchel departs.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness even suggested that had Howe become available earlier, it may have put the FA's decision to keep Tuchel in doubt.
"I think if Howe had been available right at the end of the World Cup, maybe Tuchel would have been fired after all. But I think now they are going to stick with him," he said.
"I like Eddie Howe, I have a lot of time for him. And I think he's certainly an England manager of the future without doubt. But I think he's probably got another project in him at club level before he comes back to be England manager.
"I'm sure he's going to have a break. He will take some time away from football, and then the itch comes back, and he will be out there doing all sorts of things. I think there'll be another club situation that will crop up soon and he'll get it quite easily.
"He could be the next England manager, if Tuchel goes, which I'd expect him to go after the Euros. It certainly put the FA on alert, and I think he would have been the preferred choice if the timing had been right."
Howe lost his one 'big ally' before Newcastle exit
Former Tottenham and Aston Villa scout Bryan King recently told Football Insider that Howe lost his one true "big ally" at Newcastle when Amanda Staveley left the club back in 2024.
The ex-recruitment man believes that the board have since opted to sell several of their key players against Howe's wishes.
With that in mind, King believes that it was "sensible" for the manager to step down, as he foresees a truly difficult season ahead for the Magpies.
Howe's legacy at St James' Park is unrivalled in recent years, but King believes that he lacked true support from the actions of those at the top of the club in recent months.
