Ajax are extremely reluctant to lose Aaron Bouwman amid interest from Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

The 19-year-old has established himself as a crucial player this season under new manager Michel, having made 11 appearances before an injury derailed his run of form.

Following the international break, the centre-back returned to the side as a late substitute, with scouts from across European football keeping a close eye on his progress.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Newcastle are interested in signing Bouwman but could miss out as Ajax have no plans to let him go.

The teenager is firmly on Matthias Jaissle's radar and ticks a number of boxes for the Magpies due to his age and high ceiling as they aim to strengthen their back line.

However, any January deal can likely be ruled out already, and Newcastle may be forced to wait until next summer if they want to lure Bouwman away from Ajax.

Could Newcastle make a move to sign Aaron Bouwman?

Football Insider revealed on 9 October that Newcastle have had scouts keeping a close eye on Bouwman's performances and have been impressed by what they've seen.

The Netherlands youth international would tick a number of boxes for the Magpies, who have placed an emphasis on recruiting young talents ahead of upcoming windows.

While no immediate move is believed to be on the cards, with Newcastle making long-term plans, Ajax's stance could be key with regard to his future in Amsterdam.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Bouwman, as you said, ticks a lot of boxes for the profile of the types of players that Newcastle are now looking at.

"He could be somebody that Newcastle would view as part of their long-term recruitment planning in that respect if they are looking for centre backs.

"But look, Ajax are under no pressure to sell right now. He's still learning his trade, gaining first-team experience and developing his game.

"He's under long-term contract until 2030 with the Amsterdam club as well, and they have no plans to let him leave in the near future, he's a big part of what they're trying to do there.

"So I think it's case of more probably a player that Newcastle are tracking and monitoring rather than anything firm or concrete with the move for him."

Which other clubs are interested in signing Bouwman?

Despite their scouts keeping a close eye on his progress over the last 12 months, Newcastle could face competition in the race to sign Bouwman should he become available.

His performances in the Eredivisie have attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe, with no shortage of suitors queueing up to lure him away.

Football Insider exclusiely revealed over a year ago that Chelsea are strong admirers of Bouwman and have been closely following his progress at Ajax.

The defender is regarded as the next top prospect to emerge from Ajax's famed academy, and Chelsea are keen to be at the head of the queue for his signature.

The Blues are always keen to sign Europe's brightest prospects, and Bouwman is no different, as Newcastle will face stiff competition in their pursuit.
