Sources: Joe Willock's chances of agreeing Newcastle contract revealed

Joe Willock will be offered a contract extension by Newcastle if he continues to perform well under Matthias Jaissle, sources have told Football Insider.

Willock was closely linked with leaving Newcastle throughout the summer window after entering the last year of his contract with the club.

Turkish giants Besiktas had a reported £10million offer for his services rejected in July, then returned with a higher bid that was also knocked back last month.

The 27-year-old has earned plaudits at the start of this campaign, especially after he netted against Liverpool in the Magpies' first game of the season.

He is now likely to be offered a new contract by the club after Matthias Jaissle pushed to keep him around, particularly if he continues to feature regularly in the coming months.

Newcastle are working on several new deals for their senior players, with Lewis Hall also expected to pen fresh terms soon.

Willock is one of Newcastle's longest-serving players as it stands, having initially joined the club on loan from Arsenal in 2021.

Injury issues and other players being preferred ahead of him have restricted his minutes over the years, but he still made 39 appearances across all competitions last term under Eddie Howe.

Jaissle has handed him two starts in attacking midfield in the Magpies' first three league games of this season, with Willock among the top-performers in the position for big chances created per 90 and successful dribble and pass percentage.

The club are keen to extend his deal beyond next summer if he continues to make an impact in an attempt to protect his value.

Sources revealed to Football Insider ahead of the deadline that Newcastle were planning to accept an offer for Willock, but Jaissle stood in the way of him leaving despite Besiktas' improved offer.

The German boss clearly rates him highly, although Matias Fernandez-Pardo's arrival from Lille could see him on the bench more often for the rest of this season.

Newcastle also decided to keep Jacob Murphy despite strong interest from Nottingham Forest, with Jaissle explaining the decision to retain both players last week.

He said: "We have a well-balanced squad. The lads were doing good in the pre-season. They showed their quality, they still have potential to do even better, and therefore, we made the decision that this is the final squad.

"It's not only these two players. In a long transfer window, there are many approaches for different players. It's important you have conversations with the players, that you're honest, transparent and clear about what you expect from them, but also what they expect from the club and the gaffer. We had these conversations. Everyone knows exactly where they are at which stage they are in the squad and then it was the decision that they stayed here."
