Sources: Leeds make move for Nick Pope as asking price revealed
Leeds United have registered their interest in a move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Whites are keen to sign a new number one this summer and have turned their attention to the 34-year-old.
Sources say Newcastle's asking price for Pope is around the £10-12million mark.
The veteran shot-stopper has one year remaining on his contract and is set to leave St James' Park following the arrival of Ewen Jaouen.
Newcastle are also working on signing another keeper with Manchester City's James Trafford a top target.
Leeds signed Lucas Perri in a deal worth around £14m last summer, but he has failed to impress since making the switch.
Karl Darlow ultimately finished the season as the number one, but the Wales international is yet to sign a new contract and can leave for free next week.
Pope made 27 Premier League appearances for Newcastle this season, having been usurped by Aaron Ramsdale for a run of games in March.
Leeds eye Nick Pope move
Leeds had hoped to have signed their new number one when they secured a deal for Perri last summer.
Illan Meslier had lost his place in the team amid a string of mistakes in the Championship, with it hoped that Darlow would return to his place on the bench.
An early injury gave the Brazilian the worst start, however, and his return left many unimpressed.
By January, Perri had lost his spot to Darlow, who started the final 17 Premier League games.
Leeds must now return to the market and look, once again, for a new number one.
Pope, while no longer at his best, represents an experienced option and a goalkeeper looking to end his Premier League career in between the sticks.
Pope deal will be costly
Football Insider exclusively revealed this week that Ipswich Town are also interested in a deal for Pope.
Should Newcastle's asking price remain firm, however, any interested club will have the deal's significant cost to weigh up.
Pope has just one year remaining on his contract and is 34, with his next club likely to get one or two years out of him.
With that, and his wages, in mind, the deal represents a very expensive option.
