Sources: Newcastle plan Bo Hegland move after his transfer reveal

Newcastle United are planning to reignite their interest in Djurgarden star Bo Hegland, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old has shone in the Swedish Allsvenskan this season and attracted interest from a number of top clubs, but turned down a move away during the summer.

He has since come out and confessed he was not interested in leaving his club during the now-closed window, but could make a move when the January window opens.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Hegland's confession has placed Newcastle on alert and they could now reignite their interest.

The midfieder has scored eight goals and provided 14 assists in just 21 league games so far, and the Magpies' recruitment team believe he ticks a number of boxes for them.

As they continue to assess their squad and key areas for improvement, the midfield remains a priority, and Hegland is being eyed as a target ahead of the January window.

Could Newcastle make a move to sign Bo Hegland?

Football Insider reported during the summer window that the addition of a new midfielder has become a priority for Newcastle after their major departures.

Hegland is somebody the club identified during the summer window, but no deal was on the cards as the player preferred to remain at Djurgarden until the end of their season.

However, his situation is likely to change in January, and after his comments on the situation, Newcastle could be prepared to ramp up their interest.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Yeah, if the player is saying that a move could possibly happen in January, I'm sure that will pique Newcastle's interest.

"As you said, he is a player that they have been scouting and looking at. They looked at him in the summer as they aimed to reshape their midfield.

"Hegland would tick a lot of boxes for Newcastle, he's got potential and a high cieling as well, and he has done very well for Djurgarden this season as well in Sweden.

"He's scored eight goals and provided 14 assists for them, so it's not just Newcastle who are going to be keeping tabs on him."

Which other midfielders are on Newcastle's radar?

Hegland was far from the only midfielder linked with a move to St James' Park during the summer transfer window, with Newcastle assessing a number of targets.

The Magpies ultimately landed Nico Gonzalez from Man City and Aladji Bamba from Monaco, but are eyeing further additions in that position.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider during the summer that James Garner was a target for Newcastle after his performances for Everton.

Newcastle are likely to have continued keeping tabs on the Everton midfielder despite not making a move in January, and he may remain on their list in January.
