Antonio Nusa put in a goal-scoring display on Tuesday as Norway edged past the Ivory Coast 2-1 in the World Cup round of 32.

Reports have heavily linked the 21-year-old RB Leipzig winger to Newcastle United in recent weeks, and he showed why the Premier League club are chasing him on Tuesday.

The attacker opened the scoring before half-time with one of the goals of the tournament as he cut in from the left to curl the ball into the top corner of the net.

As a result, the Norwegian media has been quick to praise his performance, claiming it was a “tremendous redemption” for Nusa.

Newcastle are looking for a replacement for Anthony Gordon this summer, and will have likely been encouraged by what they saw on Tuesday.

Nusa came into the World Cup already in great form after he picked up seven goal contributions in the Bundesliga last season.

Nusa no doubt has the potential to one day be a world-class player.

After struggling in the group stages, the winger showed exactly the quality he possessed with a goal that will go down in history against the Ivory Coast.

The Norwegian media were quick to praise the performance, as Nusa announced himself to the world stage.

Iharstad gave the winger a six rating, before they commented: “40 minutes that resembled the somewhat pale start to the World Cup, before he just made up his mind.

“Looked like he was on the favourite side at Ullevaal Stadion when he pulled in from the left and bent the ball into the far corner.

“A goal that will go down in the history books of the Norwegian national team, and a tremendous redemption for a player who had gigantic expectations before the World Cup.”

Newcastle United must make approach for Moritz Nicolas, goalkeeper is clear Nick Pope upgrade

Who else are Newcastle linked with this summer?

Elsewhere on the pitch, Newcastle are pursuing a new goalkeeper.

Nick Pope proved to be unreliable last season, which has resulted in Eddie Howe searching for a replacement.

Bart Verbruggen has now been linked with a move to Newcastle. With the Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper now out of the World Cup, there is a belief that the move could accelerate.

Verbruggen did himself no harm in the World Cup, with the Netherlands and the keeper perhaps unlucky to go out to Morocco on Monday.

The goalkeeper made numerous saves to keep the Lowland nation in the tie before they eventually were knocked out of the tournament on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

However, it remains to be seen who Newcastle try and bring in during the final months of the transfer window.
