Ewen Jaouen: 2.09 and 67% stats show Newcastle United are taking another transfer risk as bid is accepted
Ewen Jaouen looks set to become the latest signing at Newcastle United this summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper played for Reims in Ligue 2 this season, but was unable to guide the French club to the playoffs.
Newcastle have been searching for a new goalkeeper to compete with Nick Pope, who has proven to be unreliable this campaign.
Now, Fabrizio Romano on 5 June has confirmed that Jaouen will soon be a Newcastle player after a £24million bid was accepted.
Jaouen has proven himself to be a promising young goalkeeper in France. However, many of his stats this season have left much to be desired.
Ewen Jaouen had a mixed set of stats in Ligue 2 this season
The 2025-26 campaign for Reims was perhaps a missed opportunity as two draws in their last three matches ensured that they would miss out on the playoffs.
Jaouen’s performances in this timeframe did not help, with the goalkeeper having a poor end to the season.
Overall, his stats in Ligue 2 are mixed. According to Football Insider's data metric delivered by official provider Statscore, he averaged 2.09 saves a 67 per cent save percentage, 1.03 goals conceded and -0.11 goals prevented per game, making him a risky Newcastle signing.
While he did manage to keep 15 clean sheets, it is clear that he may not be ready to make the step up into the Premier League, especially as he was only playing in Ligue 2.
Therefore, Newcastle are clearly investing in his potential, and will be praying that this can be unlocked at St James’ Park over the coming seasons.
Who else are Newcastle linked with?
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle are chasing Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri.
If successful, the Magpies are looking to bring in the attacker on loan for the 2026-27 campaign as Eddie Howe looks to return the club to Europe.
Nwaneri is extremely highly regarded at the Emirates Stadium, but saw his season stagnate after making a loan switch to Marseille in the January window.
However, it remains to be seen if Newcastle are able to get the deal over the line as they look to reinforce their attacking options as well as improve their defensive capabilities.
