Insider: Anthony Gordon 'agreement' creates January 'issues' for Newcastle

Newcastle United may have to adjust their own transfer plans to cope with Barcelona delaying their first payment for winger Anthony Gordon.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the delay won’t have “alarm bells” ringing at St James’ Park just yet.

The 25-cap England international was sold to the Spanish giants in a £69million deal at the start of the summer, but recent reports have suggested that Barcelona are now delaying their initial payment of £18.8m by a year until June 2027. 

Wyness believes that Newcastle will be in full agreement with the Blaugrana over that delay, knowing that they can fall back on help from FIFA if necessary.

The worldwide governing body can help clubs to pursue delayed transfer payments through a tribunal, if the situation ultimately gets to that stage.

However, Wyness does not believe that Newcastle will be panicking over the situation with Gordon just yet, despite the early signs from Barcelona not being positive.

Newcastle could take ‘interest’ from Barcelona delay

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Magpies could potentially charge “interest” in Barcelona’s delayed payment. 

He made it clear that the buying clubs' cash flow issues may ultimately affect Newcastle’s own transfer plans for the upcoming January window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, he explained why the Tynesiders won’t be taking drastic action to get their money just yet.

"I don't think it's alarm bells ringing. I think it's maybe concern, but then again, everybody knows the issues these days when you're selling to Barcelona,” he said.

“They'll have come to an agreement with Barcelona that if there's a deferred payment, is there going to be interest on it, or is it going to be an improved amount that's going to be repaid?

“There'll be some sort of financial fix, and it's clear that Barcelona have got the wherewithal, but it's taking them time to get liquid, and that's the issue.

“There's always the FIFA backup, so Newcastle will get paid regardless. It's just a case of timing. And I'm sure they went into this with their eyes wide open about when they did the deal with Barcelona.

“What it does slightly damage for Newcastle is them spending the money on future player deals going forward. They may have to account for that as part of their own ability to pay instalments on different players.

“They've got to decide themselves as to which targets they can go after, not knowing if they can therefore make bigger cash offers up front.”

Newcastle open door to permanent Nick Woltemade exit

Football Insider revealed on Friday that Newcastle are prepared to listen to offers for German striker Nick Woltemade next summer. 

The 24-year-old has joined Juventus in a straight season-long loan deal, but the Italian side do not possess the option to buy him as part of the current agreement. 

However, the Magpies are adamant that the frontman is not part of their long-term plans, and they are prepared to cash in on him next summer as a result. 

Woltemade was an expensive buy for Newcastle last summer at £69m, and he hasn’t really been able to repay the club’s outlay to secure his signature.
