Newcastle United have expressed an interest in signing Benfica right-back Amar Dedic.

Reports emerged on Tuesday that the 23-year-old is on the Magpies’ radar as they eye defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Dedic joined Benfica ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and helped the club win the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira as he made 43 appearances in all competitions.

The defender has previously worked with Newcastle’s new manager, Matthias Jaissle, at Red Bull Salzburg.

The Magpies are in need of a new right-back this summer after Kieran Trippier departed the club for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of his contract.

As it stands, Tino Livramento is the club’s only first-team right-back, as he looks to return to full fitness ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Who is Amae Dedic?

After progressing through numerous academies, Dedic ended up at Red Bull Salzburg, and eventually made his professional debut in 2019 at 16 years old for their feeder side, Liefering.

During the 2020-21 campaign, he made his debut for Salzburg before he was loaned out to Wolfberger AC for the rest of the campaign.

Upon returning to Salzburg, Jaissle then made him a first-team player, and the club would go on to win the Austrian Bundesliga in 2023.

After another season and a half in the first-team, he was loaned out to Marseille in February 2025 until the end of the campaign.

In June 2025, Dedic moved to Benfica on a permanent deal, where he has been a hit ever since.

On top of this, the defender is also an international for Bosnia and Herzegovina. To date, he has 31 caps for his country and has scored once.

He also played a part in the 2026 World Cup and made three appearances as the Balkan nation was knocked out in the round of 32 by the USA.

Therefore, if Sam C’s report is correct about Newcastle’s interest, the club could be set to bring in a gem this summer.

Who else are Newcastle linked with this summer?

Juma Bah is another player who has been linked with a move to Newcastle this summer.

The Manchester City centre-back spent last season on loan to Nice, where he impressed the Magpies’ scouts.

The defender has been told that he is free to leave the Etihad this summer.

The Magpies are in the market to sign at least one new centre-back this summer as they look to improve upon the ageing core of their backline.
