Newcastle given Yoane Wissa hope as media impressed by World Cup display – verdict
Newcastle United have been given renewed hope that flop Yoane Wissa can be moved on to another club after his performance in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia on Tuesday.
The Magpies have made the striker available this summer after a difficult first season at St James’ Park, where he only scored one goal in the Premier League.
However, the issue Newcastle faced was finding a potential suitor for the 29-year-old after a series of horrific performances for club and country.
Yet, on Tuesday, he was finally able to show some threat in front of goal as the Democratic Republic of Congo fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Wissa was unable to score a goal, but he did receive plenty of praise from the media for his performance.
As a result, Newcastle will be hoping this can continue as they look to offload their £55million signing.
Yoane Wissa the ‘number one danger’ for Colombia
Going into the Colombia match, Wissa had finally returned to form.
The striker netted the equaliser for his nation in their shock 1-1 draw against Portugal.
Now, Wissa has been able to follow this up with another good performance, with the media quick to point out how much of a threat he was.
Homme Du Match awarded the Newcastle start a 6.5/10 before writing: “The number one danger on the Congolese side, his runs regularly worried the Cafeteros' back line.”
If this continues and Wissa is able to guide the Congo into the knockout stages with more goals, there is no doubt that clubs will be lining up to sign Wissa.
Who could replace Wissa at Newcastle this summer?
Reports have recently emerged that Newcastle are looking to sign Liam Delap from Chelsea this summer transfer window.
The striker made a move to the Blues last summer, but also struggled to perform in the Premier League, despite his success with Ipswich Town in the 2024-25 season.
A £40m price tag has been set on the 23-year-old, and Eddie Howe may view the attacker as a potential replacement for Wissa.
However, with many of the St James’ Park faithful not keen on the transfer, and Delap’s recent poor form, it remains to be seen if the Magpies make a bid for the upcoming attacker.
