Newcastle United are battling Aston Villa and Chelsea in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, sources have told Football Insider.

Ross Wilson being 'scapegoated' at Newcastle
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider on Sunday that Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson is being "scapegoated" for a difficult summer at St James' Park.
This comes after Football Insider revealed earlier in August that the recruitment chief is "fighting to keep his job" on Tyneside.
However, Wyness feels that it would be hugely "unfair" if Wilson were relieved of his duties, and feels that he cannot legislate for the number of key players that the club have lost.
