Newcastle United supporters have reacted with fury after it was confirmed that head of recruitment Steve Nickson was set to leave the club.

Reports have emerged that the 61-year-old is set for a move to the Championship as he looks to embark on his next adventure.

Nickson had been at the Magpies for 15 years and had been responsible for leading the club’s scouting operation since 2017.

As a result, his departure has resulted in shock and anger from Newcastle’s fanbase as another key figure departs the club.

It had been said that Nickson led the signings of Sven Botman and Joelinton, who have gone on to be big successes at St James’ Park.

Now, a big hole is set to be left in the Magpies’ recruitment team in a highly important transfer window for the club.

While the exact timings of Nickson’s departure remain unclear, all parties are said to be comfortable with the situation.

The Athletic’s analysis has suggested that the short-term impact could be minimal, with a summer strategy already in place as well as the fact that Nickson will have to fulfil a notice period.

However, with Nickson being a highly-regarded scout, this will be a blow for the Magpies, and fans are far from happy with the news.

Taking to X, many were quick to criticise the club for allowing a key figure like this to depart.

What is Newcastle’s transfer strategy?

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Newcastle want to sign a right-back, striker and central-midfielder this summer transfer window.

Kieran Trippier’s departure to Wolves has left a hole at right-back, while both strikers who came in to replace Alexander Isak clearly did not do enough to impress Eddie Howe.

On top of this, it is likely that a winger will now be added to the list after Anthony Gordon’s sale to Barcelona was confirmed last month.

This summer transfer window will be key for Newcastle after their terrible 2025-26 campaign saw them fail to qualify for Europe.

However, it remains to be seen if Nickson’s impending departure will have any impact on their summer business over the next couple of months.
