Newcastle to accelerate Gregor Kobel interest after World Cup heroics – verdict
Newcastle United will surely launch a bid for Gregor Kobel after his excellent performance in Switzerland’s victory over Colombia.
The 28-year-old was the hero for the Swiss in the round of 16 after he saved a penalty in the shootout after a 0-0 draw against the South American nation.
On top of this, the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper made a series of top stops throughout to help ensure that his country reached the quarter-finals.
Football Insider had previously revealed that Newcastle was a potential destination for Kobel this transfer window.
Now, after a match-winning display, the Magpies will surely re-ignite this interest as they look to solve their goalkeeping issues this summer.
Eddie Howe is still on the hunt for a new keeper this summer as the club looks to land an upgrade on Nick Pope.
Gregor Kobel was excellent vs Colombia
Going into the Colombia match, Kobel was already in great form.
The goalkeeper kept a clean sheet against Algeria in Switzerland’s 2-0 victory in the round of 32, and he put in an excellent display against Canada in the group stage as they won 2-1.
However, against Colombia, he arguably had his most important display yet.
After Manuel Akanji skied his penalty for Switzerland, Kobel would step up and save Cucho Hernandez’s effort with an expert stop.
Before this, Kobel was also excellent, with Fotmob on 8 July claiming that he made three saves and prevented 0.43 goals.
Therefore, Newcastle will surely test the waters and see if they can lure the goalkeeper away from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Every sign indicates that he could finally solve their issues in the net and prove long-term stability in goal.
How much would Kobel cost Newcastle?
Football Insider previously revealed that Kobel would cost Newcastle a “huge fee” if they wanted to bring in the Switzerland international.
Dortmund do not want to sell the goalkeeper, who has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga in recent years.
Chelsea were also linked with Kobel, but Newcastle were seen as the most likely destination in the Premier League back in April.
However, it remains to be seen where the 28-year-old will be playing his football during the 2026-27 campaign.
