Nick Woltemade has experienced an extremely difficult first season as a Newcastle United player, it would be fair to say.

Eddie Howe has been desperate for a striker to step up in the 2025-26 campaign, with fans already turning on Yoane Wissa, and it has been William Osula who has impressed in recent weeks.

Following his £69million arrival last summer, supporters expected the German international to hit the ground running, and in the beginning, he netted four goals in seven games.

However, fast-forward to May, and rumours are beginning to emerge of Woltemade wanting to move away from Newcastle, with Howe failing to give the player adequate minutes on the pitch.

Nick Woltemade exit rumours are wide of the mark

The 24-year-old has played a total of 25 minutes in the Magpies' last four Premier League matches, not even making it off the bench against Brighton at the weekend.

And when he is trusted on the pitch, he is usually thrown in out of position, much like how Joelinton was transitioned from a centre-forward to a centre-midfielder due to his struggles.

Given the amount of money spent on his signature, Newcastle simply cannot afford for his signing not to work out, so Howe really needs to give in to the player's demands to prevent an early exit.

According to the Daily Mail (7 May), while sources have played down ideas of the striker wanting to leave, Woltemade is frustrated by his lack of playing time and believes he deserves a more prominent role.

Eddie Howe can save Newcastle a lot of trouble this summer

The majority of supporters at St James' Park would agree with that sentiment, especially given the rest of the team's lack of goals this season, but it might already be too late with three matches left.

There are concerns that, should the striker impress at the 2026 World Cup, if he's selected, that is, Newcastle could be left with a decision to be made when clubs come knocking for his signature.

Woltemade was signed as an out-and-out centre-forward. There was so much excitement around his arrival, but the signing has fallen flat on its face, especially given the transfer fee.

Football Insider understands that Newcastle are putting contingency plans in place for the worst-case scenario, and that would already suggest that those behind the scenes are fearing his departure.
