Sources: Newcastle to intensify chase to sign striker with 'huge upside'

Newcastle United and Aston Villa will continue their chase of Bayer Leverkusen's Christian Kofane into the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League duo have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 20-year-old forward in recent days, but were ultimately unable to seal a deal before the deadline.

However, Kofane is set to remain on the radar at both St James' Park and Villa Park as we head towards the winter window, when they hope they will have a better chance of landing him.

Sources say that the starlet is viewed as a player with "huge upside" in terms of his future development, while interest in him is expected to grow if he continues to perform.

Kofane netted seven goals and added six assists in all competitions last term, and already has two goals from his opening two appearances in 2026-27.

He is widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga's most promising young talents, and that has attracted plenty of attention from the Premier League.

Newcastle have enjoyed a transformational summer in the transfer market, as their squad has changed drastically from the one that finished last season.
