'We will ban you' - UEFA to warn Newcastle United over new financial breaches

Published on

Newcastle United are at risk of being banned from European competitions after another two breaches of UEFA financial rules.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle will likely be given one more chance to comply.

The Magpies have been fined a total of £5.2million by UEFA for two separate breaches, the first being an overspend over a three-month period, and the other SCR-related in 2025.

Many believe this is what explains some of the transfer plans at St James' Park this summer, with Anthony Gordon already sold and Sandro Tonali on his way.

Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have all been fined by UEFA, though nothing too serious, while Marseille's situation could have been far more dangerous.

Already in a settlement agreement, the Ligue 1 giants failed to meet their final target, but it would appear that a potential ban has been pushed back by UEFA.

Newcastle United told 'we really will ban you next time'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained that, while UEFA are likely to be lenient now, Newcastle are playing with fire.

"They're quite lenient. Even if you breach the settlement agreement, they usually give you another chance," he said.

"They say, 'Well, we really will ban you next time you do it'. They'll give them one last warning. Let's see what happens.

"That's basically what happened with Marseille, although, in fairness. France has been very difficult from the TV perspective.

"But UEFA right now, Marseille got to the end of their settlement agreement, and breached it. Not by a lot, apparently.

"And UEFA, rather than banning them, which was what they could have done, they said, 'We'll give you one more chance'. So that might happen."

Could Eddie Howe lose anyone else this summer?

It is certainly a frustrating situation for the supporters at St James' Park, with two huge names already leaving this summer.

In addition to Gordon and Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes is being considered by Arsenal, while Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento are also linked with exits.

The futures of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes also remain uncertain, but Howe simply cannot afford to lose more stars.

Unless PIF can support Howe in the transfer market, frustration is likely to build amongst the fans, and the finger of blame will ultimately fall on the figure in the dugout.
