Who is Sean Steur? Everything Newcastle fans need to know as Ajax deal agreed
Newcastle are believed to be closing in on another signing after agreeing a deal with Ajax for young midfielder Sean Steur.
Eddie Howe's midfield options are being shaken up this summer after Newcastle's disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
He has already lost one of his standout performers after Sandro Tonali officially joined Tottenham for £100million on Monday.
Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a move away too, meaning the Magpies' board are moving quickly to make some new additions.
Reports emerged on Tuesday morning claiming that Newcastle have agreed a deal worth an initial £19.6m to sign Ajax starlet Steur.
He is a relative newcomer to senior football, but could be set to play a key role at St James' Park following the move.
Everything Newcastle fans must know about Sean Steur
Steur was born and raised in Purmerend, in the west of the Netherlands, and began his journey to professional football in RKAV Volendam's academy.
He joined the famed Ajax youth set-up in 2016 and progressed through the age group sides to first feature for their professional reserve side in May 2024 at 16-years-old.
Steur signed his first professional contract in August 2024 and soon began training with the first team before being handed a senior Ajax debut in February last year.
He was commended in the media for a particularly strong performance against rivals Feyenoord last season, as he registered one goal and two assists in 25 appearances in a tough campaign for the club.
Steur is also a regular for the Netherlands' under-19 side, having played in several other age-group teams in the past.
He was naturally right-footed, but revealed that years of practice with his father means he is now equally adept with his left.
Steur cites Andres Iniesta as his main footballing idol, while he has insisted that he studies the performances of Pedri and Vitinha nowadays.
Reports on these shores claim that the 18-year-old's £19.6m deal could rise to £22.6m with add-ons, while he is set to join Newcastle on a five-year contract.
What is the latest on Bruno Guimaraes' possible move to Arsenal?
Newcastle will be keen to avoid any more major sales after Tonali's Spurs move, especially in the middle of the park.
Guimaraes is their club captain and enjoyed one of the best individual seasons of his career so far in 2025-26.
His fine form has increased interest from Arsenal, but sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle plan to block any approaches for Guimaraes this summer.
They want him to sign a new contract on Tyneside, so it looks as if Steur is being signed to play with the Brazilian rather than instead of him.
