Yoane Wissa has failed to adapt to life at Newcastle, and Matthias Jaissle has not been helping.

There is plenty of sympathy for the DR Congo international, as he picked up a long-term injury not long after signing in the summer of 2025.

The injury ultimately meant he missed the African Cup of Nations tournament that season, while also losing out on invaluable time to build on-field relationships with his teammates.

In the end, it was a dismal campaign for the forward, who scored just three goals in 28 games for the Geordies.

Under Jaissle, there was early hope that a corner had been turned, with a goal and assist arriving in the opening two Premier League fixtures.

But since then, Wissa has been virtually ineffective, and the Newcastle manager now needs to have a rethink over the 30-year-old ahead of facing Coventry City.

The formation Matthias Jaissle should use in Newcastle's trip to Coventry

Newcastle have been handed more time than most in the Premier League to prepare following the international break.

Their matchup against Coventry does not kick off until Monday, 12 October at 8pm.

That will provide Jaissle with ample more time to get his team ready for the first game back following the international break.

One man who enjoyed his time away with his nation is out-of-form Newcastle striker Wissa.

In two games for DR Congo in AFCON qualification, he picked up three goal contributions - two goals and one assist.

It should come as no surprise to those who know what qualities the 30-year-old can bring, as he was used the way Jaissle should ask of him.

Wissa was constantly in and around the box, popping up in dangerous areas, with FotMob detailing that in both international fixtures he came out with more touches in the box than anyone else on the pitch.

Against Equatorial Guinea, he had eight touches, while when he faced Zimbabwe his total was seven.

Both individual numbers either equal or better his running total from his last three Premier League fixtures for Newcastle, where he has seven touches in the box over those games.

But more notably was that he performed to a higher level when paired alongside another striker.

That should give Jaissle something to think about when they travel, with the option of playing two up front now plausible following the latest injury news.

Who should partner Wissa up top?

Newcastle do have a few options to partner Wissa with William Osula now back in training, according to Chronicle Live.

Jaissle will also be able to call upon Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who only went off against Hull City with a cramp.

With Osula only back, though, risking him straight away may not make much sense.

A front two of Pardo and Wissa could ultimately be a dynamic strike force, with the former's height adding more physicality up front.
