Newcastle United are prioritising five deals in the early part of the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (28 May) that as many as nine fringe stars could leave St James' Park this summer to free up wages and squad space.

The club then announced five departures 24 hours later.

The Magpies' summer budget has been dented following their failure to qualify for European football in the 2023-24 campaign.

Nevertheless, they are eyeing deals for two centre-backs, a right winger, young forward and goalkeeper in the summer window.

The club are pushing ahead with transfer planning despite putting sporting director Dan Ashworth on gardening leave in February.

Ashworth agreed to join Man United but no replacement has been found at Newcastle - despite lengthy negotiations with Dougie Freedman, who chose to remain at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle are focusing on defensive reinforcements after serious knee injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles this season.
