Newcastle on verge of wrapping up signing after deadline is set for £20m-rated forward - report
Newcastle United are on the verge of wrapping up a deal to sign a goalkeeper, according to a report.
The Newcastle Chronicle claims that the Magpies are close to signing a new shot-stopper to become the second arrival of the January window after Kenedy completed his loan move from Chelsea.
It is understood that Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is still on the radar of Newcastle.
Rafa Benitez is still said to be in the hunt to sign a striker before Wednesday night’s deadline.
The Chronicle reports that a £15million bid has been tabled for Feyenoord forward Nicolai Jorgensen, but the Dutch champions rate the Denmark international at £20million and have set Newcastle a deadline of Monday night order to make an acceptable offer.
Jorgensen was named to start by Feyenoord in their Eredivisie clash with ADO Den Haag on Sunday, so it seems that the Rotterdam outfit are confident that the Dane may be staying put.
Football Insider verdict
Benitez has been widely reported to be looking for a goalkeeper ever since he guided Newcastle to promotion last season. A host of names have been linked with St James’ Park since then including Joe Hart, Adrian, Wayne Hennessey and Pepe Reina. Dubravka is an unknown quantity but it seems that he may the most likely shot-stopper to be on his way to Tyneside. It’s definitely odd that Benitez has spent so much time trying to bolster that area of his squad when it really is not the weakest. A good goalkeeper does not save you from relegation, a striker who can get 15 goals or more is the one that can make the difference and that should be where all of the effort is going.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are in the hunt to sign this £6million-rated forward who has been tipped for stardom by Frank Lampard.
