Santi Cazorla could miss three months with damaged knee ligaments in a shattering blow to Arsenal, Football Insider sources understand.
The Spaniard is expected to be sidelined until March with the injury he sustained in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Norwich.
It is another huge setback to Arsenal's title challenge after Cazorla's regular central midfield partner Francis Coquelin was also ruled out for between three and six months with a knee ligament injury picked up against West Brom last month.
Manager Arsene Wenger will now face further awkward questions about the never-ending cycle of serious injuries sustained by key players in the Gunners squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Wenger revealed that Cazorla also suffered a knee problem in the second half at Carrow Road but could not go off because Arsenal had already used their three substitutes.
“Cazorla played on one leg for the final part of the second half and he has a knee problem,” explained the Arsenal manager after the match.
Meanwhile, as revealed by Football Insider, there is better news about the fitness of Alexis Sanchez, who is targeting a return against Manchester City on 21 December after sustaining a hamstring injury in the same match.
The Chilean forward is expected to miss three games with the problem.
