Gareth Southgate has been tipped to make a sensational return to the England dugout after his odds were slashed to secure the managerial position with one bookmaker.

Thomas Tuchel continues to remain under scrutiny after the Three Lions’ exit to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.

Many supporters have continued to call for the German to be sacked as England now begin preparations for the 2028 Euros.

Now, one UK bookmaker has slashed the odds of Southgate returning as England’s next permanent manager down to 10/1.

The 55-year-old is yet to pick up another job since he left the Tree Lions after the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the 2024 Euros final.

Southgate had guided England to two finals, one semi-final and a quarter-final during his eight-year spell as boss.

Thomas Tuchel seems increasingly likely to be moved on

Despite the FA’s apparent backing of Tuchel, his position as manager looks increasingly precarious.

His decision to go defensive after Anthony Gordon’s goal against Argentina will go down as one of the worst in English managerial history, as the Three Lions missed a golden opportunity to make it to the final of the World Cup.

However, the fact that Tuchel has since come out and said he has “no regrets” about his decisions has only damaged his position even more with the fanbase.

Therefore, with the pressure increasing, it seems increasingly likely that Tuchel could be moved on before the 2028 Euros, with the appointment clearly not working out.

Nevertheless, it would be surprising to many if Southgate is brought in, with the manager also failing to lift silverware with England after multiple attempts.

Who is the current favourite to take over from Tuchel?

Currently, the favourite to take over from Tuchel is Eddie Howe at 5/2 odds.

The Newcastle United manager has been linked with the England position for a number of years after emerging as one of England’s best managers in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola is also in the mix at 10/3 odds, and is the current second favourite.

The former Manchester City manager is currently a free agent and has been heavily linked to the England job for years.

Mauricio Pochettino and Lee Carlsley are also considered outsiders at 7/1 and 15/2 odds.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen who will be appointed as England manager if Tuchel is moved on in the coming weeks.
