Lee Carsley is seen as increasingly likely to become England’s next permanent manager after their 2026 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 to the South American nation following two late goals from Enzo Fernandes and Lautaro Martinez.

Thomas Tuchel will take a big portion of the blame for the defeat, thanks to his defensive tactics after England took the lead.

As the inquest begins today on the manner of the defeat, Carsley is being tipped to take over from the German, with his odds tumbling down to 15/2 to become the next permanent manager.

The 52-year-old had been the interim manager of England after Gareth Southgate departed, and he won five of his six matches in charge.

Currently, Carsley is the England Under-21s manager and has led them to back-to-back European Championship victories.

Is the time already up for Thomas Tuchel?

Going into the tournament, Tuchel’s position as England boss looked secure.

The manager had signed a contract to extend his deal through to Euro 2028, which England is hosting alongside Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

However, throughout the 2026 World Cup, the Three Lions were far from convincing despite their semi-final appearance.

England struggled past every side in the knockout stages before the final four, and needed extra time to beat Norway.

Therefore, Tuchel may now be feeling the heat, and with Carsley proving himself to be a winner with the Under 21s, the FA may be tempted to make a change.

Who else is linked with the England job?

As it stands, Pep Guardiola is the favourite to take over England next at 5/2.

The former Manchester City boss is yet to choose a new club since leaving the Etihad at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, and could be tempted to go into international management.

Eddie Howe is the second-favourite to come in at 10/3 after overseeing two Champions League campaigns with Newcastle.

US boss Mauricio Pochettino is not out of the running at 7/1, while Sweden manager Graham Potter is considered an outsider at 11/1.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Tuchel will be moved on after the 2026 World Cup, as England fans continue to suffer heartbreak after heartbreak.
