Sources: Ex-Wolves, Ipswich & Sunderland boss McCarthy sacked by APOEL
Former Wolves and Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has been sacked by APOEL, Football Insider can reveal.
The 61-year-old only spent two months in the position after his surprise appointment in November.
A source has told Football Insider that McCarthy has been dismissed from his duties with immediate effect.
The news comes after APOEL were beaten 2-1 by Doxa last night to leave the Cypriot side 11th in the table after 16 games.
A run of four straight losses ultimately proved costly for McCarthy, who was managing outside of the the UK and Ireland for the first time in his career.
McCarthy stood down from his second stint as the Republic of Ireland boss in April amid the coronavirus pandemic.
He was immediately replaced by Stephen Kenny, who had been in charge of the nation's under-21s.
He is held in high regard by his native Ireland after he guided the national side to the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
The APOEL job was McCarthy's first role in club management since Ipswich Town, he left Portman Road in April 2018 after a six-year spell at the club.
He has also managed Sunderland, Wolves and Millwall in a managerial career that has spanned over 18 years.
McCarthy began his playing career at Barnsley in 1977, and he later had spells at Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon, and Millwall before retiring in 1992.
