Sources: McCarthy on Celtic shortlist as contract details revealed
Mick McCarthy is on the Celtic new manager shortlist after making an impressive impact at Cardiff City, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The former Hoops captain has guided Cardiff into the play-off positions since taking over as manager on 22 January.
A Celtic source has told Football Insider that McCarthy, 62, is regarded as an attractive option due to his pedigree, availability and links to the club.
Significantly, the experienced manager is out of contract at Cardiff at the end of the season and there would be no compensation involved in a summer move.
Former centre-back McCarthy spent two years at Celtic during his playing days and was a popular player with supporters.
He has extensive managerial experience at club and international level over nearly 30 years.
They include lengthy spells at Wolves, Sunderland, Ipswich Town and Millwall as well as two stints with the Republic of Ireland.
The former defender's two posts since standing down as the Ireland boss in April of last year have been at Cypriot club APOEL and Cardiff.
He was sacked by APOEL in January after just two months but arrived at Cardiff soon afterwards to make a quick impact.
The Welsh club were in 15th and a distant 13 points adrift of sixth place when McCarthy arrived to replace Neil Harris.
In his previous roles, the Barnsley-born managers most impressive achievements were getting Sunderland and Wolves promoted to the Premier League as well as establishing them in the top flight on relatively small budgets.
