Liverpool have made a shortlist of five midfield targets after pulling out of the race for Jude Bellingham, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds had been long-term admirers of the 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund star but deemed him too expensive given their summer budget and have instead turned their attention towards other midfielders.

It is understood that Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Joao Palhinha, Nicolo Barella and Alexis Mac Allister are the five names on Liverpool's shopping list this summer.

Brighton star Moises Caicedo is also admired by the Liverpool recruitment team, but there is plenty of interest in him from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea and his price tag is set to be huge after the Seagulls rejected a £70million bid for him in January.

Mac Allister has emerged as Liverpool's new first-choice target following the Bellingham dropout, with the Merseyside club viewing him as a slightly cheaper option.

Mac Allister, 24, has scored 10 goals for Brighton this season across all competitions.

Liverpool are also set to raid Chelsea for Mount, with his contract negotiations stalling at Stamford Bridge with just one year remaining on his deal.

Gallagher could also join Mount in swapping London for Liverpool, while Fulham star Palhinha offers a more defensive option for Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool recruitment team.

The final name on the shortlist is Barella, who has scored five and assisted seven for Inter Milan this season.

Liverpool scouts have thoroughly watched the 26-year-old Italian and it is understood that he will push for a move away from the club if Inter does not qualify for the Champions League this season.
