Wayne Rooney is facing fresh calls to resign by Plymouth Argyle fans following his side's humiliating 4-0 thumping at Coventry City.

Going into the game, Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard had suggested his former Premier League playing rival and England teammate had not got the results he "deserved" since taking charge of the Pilgrims.

It would prove to be another tough afternoon for the ex-Man United and England striker at the CBS Arena on Boxing Day.

Rooney's Plymouth side found themselves 4-0 down before half-time as they suffered another heavy defeat that was then conflated by a late red card for Callum Wright.

As a result, the 39-year-old now finds himself facing more calls to resign by supporters of his club.

Rooney has recently claimed he is set to hold talks with the club's board about transfers, suggesting he is set to stay at the club at least until next month's transfer window.

But after his side suffered yet another heavy defeat on Boxing Day, Plymouth remain bottom of the Championship table, now two points from safety.

As a result, many of the Pilgrims' supporters were left to speculate whether Rooney's time at the club could now be up as they took to social media to react to that latest defeat.
