Kevin Phillips has claimed Tottenham target Ryan Fraser has a “big move” lined up this summer after Bournemouth revealed that the winger had refused to sign a short-term deal at the club.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was torn between the 26-year-old and Eddie Howe but concluded that players should finish off the season at their current club.
Fraser has turned down the Cherries offer of a short-term contract extension which would allow him to remain with the club until the completion of the 2020/21 campaign.
Football Insider revealed that Bournemouth believe the Scotland international has already agreed terms with a new club.
The player’s preference is a move to Jose Mourinho’s Spurs but Everton and Arsenal are also keen on the versatile wide-man.
When asked by Football Insider if the decision reflects badly on Fraser, Phillips said:
“Eddie Howe will understand but he is trying to keep Bournemouth in the Premier League and you need your best players to do that.
“I am sure the thoughts of Eddie will be similar to the thoughts of Lee Bowyer regarding Lyle Taylor – they started the season, so you finish the season.
“But no one saw this coming, what happened [with the pandemic], of course, so I understand it from the players point of view.
“Ryan Fraser is not young. He has a big move to a big club and he does not want to get injured. I understand.
“I would like to see these players see the season out with the clubs that they are at.”
Eddie Howe told BBC: “It was a huge blow for us.
“It is not the outcome that I know he wanted or I wanted.”
